What happens if your ball moves after you mark it?
The situation
You place your ball marker behind your ball on the green, then as you lift the ball or even just afterwards, the ball marker shifts or the ball rolls slightly before you pick it up.
The rule
Under Rule 9.7a, if a ball marker accidentally moves during any part of the marking and lifting process, there is no penalty — you replace the ball in its original position (or put the marker back where it was). This also applies if the ball rolls away during the act of marking: no penalty, replace it. The key word is "accidentally" — this rule protects normal, careful play.
Real example
You're on the green and place your marker behind your ball, but in doing so you accidentally nudge the ball with your finger and it rolls three inches. No penalty — replace the ball in front of the marker and continue.
What to do on the course
- Replace the ball (or marker) in the original position — estimate if necessary
- No stroke added, just correct the situation
- If someone else's ball or equipment moved yours after you marked and lifted it: same result — no penalty, replace it
Penalty
No penalty. Replace the ball in its original position.
