Mastering Golf Rule 17: Penalty Areas Explained

Golf Rule 17 focuses on penalty areas, which are areas on the course designated by the Committee, typically containing water (though not necessarily), and which, as the name suggests, incur penalties if your ball lies in them.

What is a Penalty Area?

A penalty area is a defined area on the course where a ball may fall and incur a penalty. Traditionally, these areas were ponds or streams, but now they can include deserts, jungles, or any other area defined by the Committee. They are usually marked with colored stakes or lines.

  • Red Stakes/Lines: The penalty area is lateral. This offers additional relief options.
  • Yellow Stakes/Lines: The penalty area is not lateral.

Relief Options (Rule 17.1)

When your ball is in a penalty area, you have several options:

  1. Play the ball as it lies: If you're feeling brave (or the ball is visible and playable), you can play the ball from the penalty area without further penalty. But be careful! Water, mud, or other vegetation can make the shot difficult.
  2. Penalty Relief: This is the most common option. You can take relief with a one-stroke penalty. The options depend on the color of the stakes/lines:
    • Yellow Penalty Area:
      • Back-on-the-Line Relief: You can drop a ball outside the penalty area, keeping the original point where the ball crossed the edge of the penalty area between the hole and the spot where you drop, with no limit as to how far back you can go.
    • Red Penalty Area:
      • Back-on-the-Line Relief (like yellow): Same as for a yellow area.
      • Lateral Relief: Drop within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area, not nearer to the hole.

Practical Examples:

  • Scenario 1: Your ball lands in a pond marked with yellow stakes. You don't want to play the ball as it lies. You must use the back-on-the-line relief option. You identify the point where the ball crossed the edge of the pond, and you can drop the ball anywhere on the line going back from that point, as far back as you need, but keeping that point between the hole and where you drop.
  • Scenario 2: Your ball lands in a ditch with red stakes. Again, you don't want to play the ball as it lies. You have the options of back-on-the-line relief and lateral relief. Lateral relief allows you to drop within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the ditch, not nearer to the hole.

Penalties

Hitting the ball into a penalty area incurs the standard penalty of one stroke. Remember that you cannot make a practice swing touching the ground inside the penalty area or move loose impediments.
