Ball Moved Accidentally: Penalty or Not?

Ball Moved Accidentally: Penalty or Not?

What Rule 9.4 says

Rule 9.4 establishes that if a player accidentally moves their ball in play (or causes it to move), the penalty is generally 1 stroke, and the ball must be replaced in its original position.

However, there are important exceptions that changed with the 2019 Rules.

When there IS a penalty (1 stroke)

  • You move your ball while setting up for the stroke (even without grounding the club)
  • You move your ball while removing a loose impediment (stone, leaf) near it
  • You move your ball while measuring a distance or checking the line of play
  • Your caddie moves your ball

In all these cases: 1-stroke penalty + replace the ball in its original position.

When there is NO penalty

On the putting green (2019 change)

Before 2019, accidentally moving your ball on the green during preparation for a putt was penalised. Since 2019:

If the player or caddie accidentally moves the ball on the putting green, there is no penalty. The ball must be replaced in its original position.

This applies even if you touch the ball with the club, your foot, or the marker while trying to mark it.

While searching for the ball

If you accidentally move your ball while searching for it, there is no penalty (Rule 7.4). Replace the ball in its original position and continue.

By natural forces (Rule 9.3)

If the ball moves due to wind, water, or another natural force without the player having touched it, there is no penalty even if you had already taken your stance. The ball is played from wherever it came to rest after the natural movement.

The "addressing the ball" question

A common source of confusion: what counts as having "addressed the ball"?

Under Rule 9.4, a player has addressed the ball when they have taken their stance and grounded the club next to the ball. If the club doesn't touch the ground, the ball has not been formally addressed.

Before 2019 (old rule): if the ball moved after address, it was automatically the player's penalty.

Since 2019: what matters is whether the player caused the movement, not whether the ball had been addressed. If the movement was natural (wind, etc.), there is no penalty.

Procedure when you accidentally move the ball

  1. Replace the ball in its original position as accurately as possible
  2. If you don't remember the exact position, place it in the most likely spot (reasonable estimate)
  3. Apply the relevant penalty (or confirm that no penalty applies under your situation)
