How the rule works

In match play the number of strokes you get is set by your handicap. If you mark the wrong hole with those strokes, the opponent can call you out. The score on that hole is considered as if you never took the stroke, and you lose the hole outright. The mistake has to be caught before you tee off on the next hole; after that the score stands but you may still be disqualified if the error is discovered later.

What if you don’t correct it?

If you keep playing with the wrong handicap allocation and the mistake isn’t spotted until after a few holes, the committee can retroactively apply the penalty. That means the hole is lost and your overall match score is adjusted, sometimes leading to disqualification if the breach is serious. The key is to fix the allocation as soon as you realize it.
