What happens if I lift my ball thinking it might interfere but nobody asked me to?

You get one penalty stroke if you lift your ball anywhere on the course because you think it might interfere with another player, unless that player actually asked you to lift it. The only exception is on the putting green, where Rule 13.1b lets you mark and lift your own ball at any time — no request needed.

When you can and can't lift for interference

Rule 15.3b covers a ball anywhere on the course — not just the green — that might interfere with your stance, swing, line of play, or simply distract you. If another player's ball is in your way, you can ask them to mark and lift it. They must replace it on the exact spot and can't clean it (unless it's on the green). But the rule works one way: you can require them to lift; you can't lift your own ball just because you think it might be in their way. If you do, it's a one-stroke penalty.

The putting green is different

On the putting green, Rule 13.1b lets you mark and lift your own ball whenever you want — you don't need anyone's permission. That's why Rule 15.3b(2) specifically carves out an exception: lifting on the green under Rule 13.1b is never a penalty, even if nobody asked you to. Off the green, though, you wait to be asked.

What the other player has to do

When you're asked to lift under Rule 15.3b, you must mark the spot first. If you lift without marking, or you clean the ball when you're not allowed to (anywhere except the green), that's also a one-stroke penalty on you. In stroke play, the player who was asked to lift can choose to play first instead of lifting — their call.

Exceptions that change the answer

• Your ball is on the putting green and you lift it under Rule 13.1b → No penalty — you're allowed to mark and lift your own ball on the green at any time, whether anyone asks or not.
• Another player asks you to lift because your ball interferes with their play → No penalty for lifting — but you must mark first, not clean (unless on the green), and replace on the original spot.

My ball is near another player's line off the green. Can I lift it to be nice?

No. If you lift it without being asked, you get one penalty stroke. Wait for them to ask — or for them to play first in stroke play.

Can I clean my ball when lifting for interference off the green?

What if I mark my ball but don't lift it — just rotate it to identify it?

Rotating a ball in place to identify it is allowed without penalty under Rule 7.3, as long as you mark it first and return it to the same orientation. That's not 'lifting' under Rule 15.3b.
