What happens if I start the round with more than 14 clubs?
You get penalized the moment you tee off with more than 14 clubs. In stroke play it's two strokes for each hole where the breach happened, max four strokes total. In match play you lose the hole, max two holes.
What the rule says
Rule 4.1b(1) caps you at 14 clubs for the round. That limit covers every club you, your caddie, or anyone else carries for you — even if they're just walking along holding extras you might swap in later. If you show up on the first tee with 15, you're already in breach.
How the penalty works
In stroke play you add two penalty strokes for each hole where you started with too many clubs, capped at four strokes for the round. In match play the penalty is loss of hole for each hole where the breach existed, max two holes. The match adjustment is applied at the end of the hole where the breach is discovered if anyone has already teed off on that hole.
What to do the moment you realize
Immediately declare the excess club out of play — turn it upside down in the bag, hand it to someone, or leave it beside the tee. You must do this before making another stroke. Once it's out of play you can finish the round with the remaining 14; you don't have to identify which specific club was the extra one.
Exceptions that change the answer
- You discover the breach in match play before anyone has teed off on the next hole → The match adjustment penalty is applied at the end of the current hole, not the next one.
- An adjustable club was changed but you restore it to its original setting before using it → No penalty and the club may be used (Exception to Rule 4.1a(3)).
- A non-permissible external attachment (like a sticker on the face) is removed before the club is used → No penalty and the club may be used (Exception to Rule 4.1a(3)).
Frequently asked questions
Does it count if my caddie or a friend carries the extra clubs?
Yes. Any club carried by you, your caddie, or anyone you ask to carry clubs counts toward the 14-club limit (Interpretation 4.1b(1)/1).
Can I just leave the 15th club in the car trunk?
If it's not on the course and nobody is carrying it for you during the round, it doesn't count. Only clubs being carried during the round count.
What if I notice on the first tee before anyone hits?
Declare the extra club out of play immediately. In match play, since no one has started the hole, the penalty is applied at the end of that first hole. In stroke play, you take the two-stroke penalty for the first hole (max four total).
Do I get penalized even if I never used the extra club?
