How to fix a wrong ball substitution before you play

If you've ever substituted a ball when you weren't allowed to, or had a ball placed in the wrong spot, you can correct it — without penalty — as long as you catch it before you make a stroke at that ball. Rule 14.5a lets you lift the ball and proceed correctly.

When you can correct the mistake

You can correct the mistake whenever you substituted a ball when the Rules didn't allow it, or when your ball in play was replaced, dropped, or placed (1) in a wrong way, (2) in a wrong place, or (3) by using a procedure that didn't apply. The key is you must catch it before you make a stroke at that ball. Once you swing, the mistake is locked in and penalties apply.

How to correct it properly

Lift the incorrectly substituted or placed ball and proceed correctly — drop, place, or replace it the right way under the Rule that applies. No penalty for the original mistake. If you already played the ball
