How to take the free relief

First, confirm the object meets the definition of a movable obstruction — an artificial object that can be moved without unreasonable effort and without damaging the course. If it does, mark the spot right under where the ball sits in or on the obstruction. That spot is your reference point. What counts as a movable obstruction

If the ball moves while you're removing the obstruction

No penalty. Replace the ball on its original spot (estimate it if you're not sure). If the ball was in or on the obstruction and you can't replace it there because the obstruction is gone, you still proceed under Rule 15.2a(2) using the estimated point right under where the ball last crossed the edge of the obstruction as your reference point.

Exceptions that change the answer

• The obstruction is a tee-marker and your ball will be played from the teeing area → You must not move the tee-marker (Rule 6.2b(4) / 8.1a(1)).
