Bunkers & HazardsRule 9.1Updated 2026

What happens if your ball rolls out of the bunker after the shot?

The situation

You play a bunker shot, the ball clips the lip, and instead of going onto the green it rolls back down and out of the bunker on the other side — or your shot carries too far and the ball rolls off the green into the rough.

The rule

Under Rule 9.1a, the ball must be played as it lies. Once you've made your stroke, the ball is in play wherever it comes to rest — including outside the bunker. There is no rule requiring your ball to stay in the bunker, and no penalty for it leaving. If it rolls back inside the bunker on the near side, play it from there. If it clears the bunker and stops on the green or in the rough, play it from there. The bunker is simply where the ball was — after the stroke, normal rules apply.

Real example

Your bunker shot catches the lip and rolls back into the bunker from a different angle, now with a worse lie. No penalty — you play your third shot from this new bunker lie. Or your shot rolls through the bunker and across the green into the fringe — play your third shot from the fringe.

What to do on the course

  • Play the ball from wherever it came to rest — no special rules apply after a bunker shot
  • If the ball rolls into a penalty area after leaving the bunker, take penalty area relief as normal (1 stroke)
  • If it rolls onto the wrong green, take free relief from the green surface but not from the fringe
  • Rake the bunker after playing — this is etiquette, not a rules requirement, but expected

Penalty

No penalty. Play the ball from where it came to rest.
