What happens if my ball moves after I drop or place it on the fairway?

If natural forces move your ball after you've dropped or placed it on the fairway and it comes to rest in another area of the course or out of bounds, you must replace it on its original spot with no penalty under Rule 9.3 Exception 2. Otherwise, you play it from the new spot.

The general rule — play it from the new spot

When wind, water, or any other natural force moves your ball at rest, there's no penalty. You simply play the ball from where it comes to rest. This applies everywhere on the course unless one of the two exceptions kicks in. So if your ball rolls a few feet on the fairway after you've dropped it, you play it from the new location.

Exception 2 — when you must replace it

If you've put a ball into play by dropping, placing, or replacing it, and natural forces then move that ball at rest into another area of the course or out of bounds, you must replace it on its original spot. On the fairway, "another area" means the rough, a bunker, a penalty area, or out of bounds. If the ball just moves within the fairway, this exception doesn't apply — you play it from the new spot.

How to replace it when the exact spot is unknown

If you don't know the exact original spot, you estimate it as best you can and replace the ball there. This is the same procedure used whenever a ball must be replaced but the spot isn't certain. Once replaced, the ball is back in play and you continue from there.

Exceptions that change the answer

• Ball on putting green that was lifted and replaced moves for any reason → Must be replaced on original spot (Rule 13.1d / Exception 1)
