It’s fascinating to discover why people use one golf ball instead of another. I’ve spent some time digging into it.
Most of the attention amateur golfers give to choosing their gear goes into clubs.
Choosing the best clubs.
But in reality, the thing that can create the biggest difference in the result of a shot — for the same level of player — is, ta-daaa…
The ball.
The ball is there for every single shot you hit. And almost nobody pays attention to it:
Some choose the “coolest” one, because of brand, prestige and tradition. Titleist Pro V1. A beginner won’t get the most out of that ball, and if they lose too many of them, they’ll go broke.
Others play recovered or recycled balls. Quality-wise, it’s a bit of a lottery, but if you’re just starting out, the price is unbeatable. Others choose their ball because of the “feel” it gives them at impact. Which is often the smartest thing. “Make it soft,” right?
Others get interested in the “anatomy and physiology” of the ball: Urethane or ionomer cover. Two, three, four or five layers. How much compression the ball has. More or less firmness. How many dimples it has. Air resistance. How much spin it produces. How much it rotates on itself.
The worse your ball-striking is, the more price and forgiveness matter. The better your ball-striking is, the more spin, trajectory and repeatability matter.
The best ball isn’t the one the pro plays.
It’s the one that makes you lose fewer shots, less patience and less money.
Right? And you? What ball do you use? Tell me in the comments. Oh wait, there are no comments here. Hahahaha.
Next week I’ll tell you which golf ball sells the most — and why. Have a great weekend, golfer!
Train. And if you use LAZAR, tell me if it’s useful or not! Reply to this email, pretty please. Pretty please?? I’m losing it… Hahahaha.
