When you first get into golf, they tell you that you’re supposed to wear one glove, on the hand that grips the club the most.
And well, fair enough.
But there’s no rule saying you have to wear a glove — great golfers like Fred Couples don’t wear one — and there’s also no rule saying you can’t wear two.
AI-generated golfers probably wear 2 gloves on the same hand. Hahahaha
In Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey’s case, wearing 2 black gloves earned him his nickname, some popularity, and a little bit more. Let me tell you quickly…
The guy worked in a water-heater factory in South Carolina, and because he had played baseball as a kid, he just wore two gloves. Turns out he got into a Golf Channel reality show called The Big Break, where his fight with the golf swing became famous. He went on to win the 2007 edition, and in 2010 he earned his PGA Tour card.
Two years later, he shows up at the PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic. The guy arrives with a backyard swing, very little experience…
And two black gloves. Two black Callaway rain gloves.
And he reaches the final round seven shots off the lead. Then he starts making birdies. Black ones. Ah no, hahaha.
Then he makes an eagle on the par-5 15th. And another birdie on 16. He finishes with a 60.
When he walked off the course, he wasn’t automatically the champion. The leaders were still out there.
So he had to wait. Sitting down. I assume he ordered a little beer or something… hahahaha.
He waited more than two hours for “the good players” to finish. They couldn’t catch him.
Gainey beat David Toms by one shot.
Moral of the story — at least for me: There isn’t just one way to do things.
Have a great weekend, golfer. Go out there and hit it, with gloves or without them!
