There is a myth in amateur golf: "If I take a penalty stroke, I have failed."
False.
A penalty stroke is not a fine; it is a price tag. You are buying a perfect lie for the cost of one stroke. And often, that is the best investment of the day.
The "Hero Shot" Fallacy
Your ball is under a bush. You can barely see the flag through the branches. You have to hit crouching, backhanded, and praying.
Your Plan A (The Hero): You try to hack it out. You hit a branch. The ball advances 6 feet and settles in another bad bush. You hit again. Out to fairway. On the green. Two putts. Result: Double Bogey or Triple Bogey. (And a ruined mood).
The Lazar Plan (The Strategist): You analyze the situation. You see the success rate is 10%. You decide to declare Unplayable Ball (Rule 19).
The 3 Purchasing Options (Rule 19.2)
For one penalty stroke, Rule 19 offers you three escapes:
- Stroke and Distance: Go back to where you played the previous shot. (Ideal if you're in a mess you can't even drop out of).
- Back-on-the-Line: Keep the point where the ball lies and the flag aligned, and go back as far as you want. (Perfect for finding a flat spot with good grass).
- Lateral Relief: Measure two club-lengths from where the ball lies (no nearer the hole) and drop. (The classic option to get out of the bush onto the fairway).
The Math of the Penalty
Let's go back to the bush. You decide to declare unplayable.
- Stroke 1: The one that got you in trouble.
- Stroke 2 (Penalty): You take the ball out of the bush and place it on the fairway, clean and perfect.
- Stroke 3: Hit a comfortable iron to the green.
- Stroke 4: A good putt or two.
Result: Bogey (or even Par if you stick the approach).
You have turned a potential disaster of 7 or 8 shots into a solid 5.
When to Use It?
Next time you are in trouble, ask yourself this question: "Can I get the ball on the green with the next shot from here?"
- If the answer is NO, then your goal is simply to get back to the fairway.
- If trying to get back to the fairway carries risk (branches, water, OB), buy the exit. Pay the penalty stroke. It is cheaper than the risk of staying there.
Pros don't win tournaments by hitting miracle shots from the trees every week. They win because when they get in trouble, they escape with a Bogey and move on. You should do the same.
