Knee vs. Shoulder: How to Drop a Golf Ball Correctly

Dropping from the shoulder is a penalty! Learn the correct knee-height drop procedure required by Rule 14.3.

The Most Common Amateur Mistake

You see pros correctly drop from the knee, but habit makes many amateurs still drop from shoulder height. Since 2019, Rule 14.3b is strict: The ball must be let go from knee height.

Why the Change?

Dropping from the knee:

  1. Reduces the ball's roll upon impact, keeping it closer to the spot.
  2. Speeds up play (fewer re-drops).
  3. Removes subjectivity about "shoulder height".

The Correct Procedure

  1. Stand straight.
  2. Bend your knee if you like (optional, but helps gauge height).
  3. Hold the ball at the level of your knee.
  4. Let go straight down (don't throw, spin, or push).
  5. It must not touch your body or equipment before hitting the ground.

What If I Mess Up?

If you drop from shoulder height and play it: 1 Penalty Stroke (if you catch your mistake before hitting, just re-drop correctly with no penalty).
