You accidentally moved your ball on the green... Don't panic!
You're on the green, you bend down to mark your ball, and you accidentally brush it with your finger. It moves a few millimetres. Your heart races. Penalty? Extra stroke?
Relax. The green is a sanctuary. The rules here are kinder than you think.
Rule 13.1d: Your Shield Against Accidents
If you move your ball or marker by accident while marking, cleaning, or preparing for your putt, the rule is clear: no penalty.
All you need to do is replace the ball on its original spot and carry on as if nothing happened.
This applies when the accidental movement is caused by:
- You (while marking, cleaning, or aligning)
- Your caddie (while handling the ball or marker)
- Your fellow competitor (if they brush your marker while passing)
What if it Moves on its Own? Wind and Gravity
This is where the rule gets fascinating — and where many golfers get confused:
Scenario 1: The ball was NOT marked and the wind moves it
- Play the ball from where it came to rest, even if it rolled into a bunker or off the green.
- No penalty, but you can't replace it. Wind is a "natural force".
Scenario 2: You had already marked, lifted, and replaced the ball, and the wind moves it
- You MUST replace it on the original marked spot.
- That spot is "yours" once marked. It doesn't matter what the wind does afterwards.
This distinction is critical and can save you strokes on a windy day.
The Mistake That WILL Cost You 2 Strokes
Accidental movement carries no penalty. But there's one mistake that does: playing the ball from where it ended up without replacing it on its original position.
If you accidentally move the ball and play it directly from the new spot: 2 penalty strokes for playing from a wrong place. The mistake isn't moving it — it's not correcting it.
Quick Reference
| Situation | Penalty? | What to do? |
|---|---|---|
| Move ball while marking/cleaning | No | Replace on original spot |
| Wind moves it (not marked) | No | Play from where it stopped |
| Wind moves it (already marked and replaced) | No | Replace on marked spot |
| Play without replacing it | 2 strokes | Correct before next hole |
