Each hole is its own mini-contest. The player with the lower score on that hole wins it. If tied, the hole is halved (½).
"X up" means you lead by X holes. "All Square" means tied. The tracker shows the net difference in holes won.
When your lead equals the holes remaining. E.g. 3 up with 3 to play. The leader cannot lose — only win or draw.
Expressed as "X & Y" — X holes up with Y holes left when it's mathematically impossible to reverse. E.g. 3&2.
