The Most Common Amateur Mistake
You see pros correctly drop from the knee, but habit makes many amateurs still drop from shoulder height. Since 2019, Rule 14.3b is strict: The ball must be let go from knee height.
Why the Change?
Dropping from the knee:
- Reduces the ball's roll upon impact, keeping it closer to the spot.
- Speeds up play (fewer re-drops).
- Removes subjectivity about "shoulder height".
The Correct Procedure
- Stand straight.
- Bend your knee if you like (optional, but helps gauge height).
- Hold the ball at the level of your knee.
- Let go straight down (don't throw, spin, or push).
- It must not touch your body or equipment before hitting the ground.
What If I Mess Up?
If you drop from shoulder height and play it: 1 Penalty Stroke (if you catch your mistake before hitting, just re-drop correctly with no penalty).
Tip: Not sure if your situation calls for penalty relief or free relief? Ask Lazar with a photo of your lie and it will explain which rule applies.
